Figure 4.4: Types of learning.

The following sections present brief definitions of each learning type and sample verbs that may be found in the curriculum. Teams should use the verbs as a starting point for identifying the types of learning. Each time the team members find a verb in the curriculum that is not mentioned in the following lists, they need to decide which learning type it belongs to and add it to their own verb list.

Knowledge

Knowledge includes factual information, procedural knowledge, and conceptual understandings that provide the foundational content. In CTE, the knowledge expectations come from the curriculum students are expected to learn. Knowledgelevel learning targets in CTE curricula may include facts like knowing fractions down to one sixteenth of an inch, knowing names of tools or equipment, recalling facts of an industry’s history, and listing all of the steps to safely operate equipment.

The following are examples of verbs that may indicate that the essential learning type is knowledge based.

• Define

• Identify

• Describe

• Recall

• Locate

• Examine
